Biological Safety Amid Global Threats: Outcomes of the QazBioPharm International Conference

On November 27–28, 2025, in Astana, the National Holding “QazBioPharm” JSC hosted the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Biological Safety Amid Global Threats: Scientific and Technological Approaches to Counteraction.” The event brought together more than 300 participants, including representatives of government agencies, leading Kazakhstani and international scientists, specialists from academic institutions and research centers, as well as experts from Kazakhstan, Russia, France, and China.

The conference served as the final platform for presenting the results of the 2023–2025 three-year scientific and technical program implemented by the Biological Safety Consortium. Participants showcased key achievements, including the development of comprehensive Atlases on dangerous and particularly dangerous animal infections. These Atlases compile data on bacterial, parasitic, fungal, and viral diseases such as anthrax, bovine tuberculosis, brucellosis, ovine epididymitis, alveolar echinococcosis, equine trypanosomosis, epizootic lymphangitis, bluetongue, Newcastle disease, avian influenza, foot-and-mouth disease, sheep and cattle pox, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, and bovine viral diarrhea. The Atlases include distribution maps, epizootiological data, and risk assessments relevant to biological safety.

The conference addressed modern methods for monitoring epidemiological and epizootic conditions, approaches to diagnosis, prevention, and control of biological threats, as well as technologies for developing immunobiological products and issues related to antimicrobial resistance. More than 70 presentations were delivered, and an exhibition of high-tech products created by the Consortium was organized, allowing participants to explore test systems, vaccine platforms, pharmaceuticals, and technological solutions for monitoring and preventing infectious diseases.

A collection of abstracts was published following the conference, featuring 101 contributions from scientists from Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan. The event concluded with the adoption of a resolution expressing gratitude to the ministries of science and higher education, health, agriculture, as well as sponsoring companies for their support. The resolution emphasized the need to continue research in biological safety, improve epidemiological and epizootic surveillance, accelerate the development of diagnostic and preventive tools, enhance specialist training, and strengthen international scientific cooperation.

The conference demonstrated Kazakhstan’s strong scientific potential and highlighted the significant contribution of the National Holding “QazBioPharm” to the development of the national biological safety system and the implementation of modern scientific solutions.
